Too many children starting school at risk is now a national emergency, expert says
Research showing one in five children starting their school life vulnerable and at risk in one or more developmental areas has been labelled a national crisis.
Details within the data indicate the problem is far worse for young people living in rural and remote areas.
peaking at the Caring for Country Kids conference in Alice Springs, Professor Frank Oberklaid from the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne said urgent action was required.
“I think it’s a national emergency because it has long-term implications not just for these children but indeed for the future productivity of the country,” he said.
