Reading to children from young age improves literacy outcomes: experts

PARENTS are being encouraged to establish a reading routine early in their child’s life, with experts claiming it is never too soon to begin reading to a baby.

Professor Frank Oberklaid from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute said children’s brains are extremely receptive in their first three years, and parents can do a great deal during this period to improve their child’s literacy outcomes.

“It is those years before a child starts school that are so important for setting the foundations for future learning,” he said.
